Hopefully those who live by the Jonas Brothers don't also die by the Jonas Brothers.

New York-based pop-rock band Honor Society was the first act signed to the Jonas BrothersÕ Jonas Records, with their debut album ÒFashionably LateÓ hitting the Top 20, and opened for their summer tour last year, playing not only to packed arenas but also their own parallel club tour.

But a year later, at AllentownÕs Crocodile Rock CafŽ on Thursday, they played to perhaps 300 peopleÑexclusively Ôtween girls, except for the occasional father standing off to the side.

But it would be a shame if Honor SocietyÕs fate is to fade away as the JonasÕ popularity wanes.

They not only are a musically talented quartet who play far better songs than the disposable teen pop act, but theyÕve actually improved and grown since being removed from the Jonas glare and the overproduction of their show.

Honor Society played 15 songs in just over an hour Thursday, including two medleys Ð one of their own tunes and another of recent hits ÒIn My HeadÓ by Jason Derulo, Lady GagaÕs ÒSpeechless,Ó Lady AntebellumÕs ÒNeed You Now,Ó Kings of LeonÕs ÒUse SomebodyÓ (which also was covered by Nick Jonas on his solo tour this winter) and a soft, gentle and very good ÒDownÓ by Jay Sean.

Those songs, with front man Michael Bruno and keyboardist Jason Rosen on acoustic guitars, were all great and helped show how musically proficient Honor Society is. But the groupÕs own songs showed that as well.

After opening with ÒRock With YouÓ and the obligatory (but good) hits ÒSee U in the DarkÓ (virtually the whole crowd was doing the ÒHonor RollÓ fan line dance), ÒHere Comes TroubleÓ and ÒTwo Rebels,Ó the band showed off its chops with a new song, ÒCanÕt Box Me In,Ó that showed a more punk/pop flavor and actually growth in the way the song was more stripped down. Bruno even shed his guitar (and leather jacket) to jump around the stage.

The slower, acoustic ÒWhen I Get HomeÓ was flat-out great. The band let the audience sing a verse, and for the line ÒScream it at the top of my lungs,Ó they literally did. The penultimate song, ÒNo Only You,Ó was grittier, and better, than the original.

Honor Society can still generate deafness-inducing screams and get its young audience in a frenzy Ð they jumped and kept time to the beat clapping above their heads on ÒMy Own Way,Ó and cheered very loudly to ÒNobody Has to KnowÓ and the closing ÒFull Moon Crazy.Ó

And their show still has elements left over from the Jonas run Ð there was lots of lights and stage fog, and they brought opening acts Just Kait and Ashlyne Huff on stage for ÒDonÕt Close the Book.Ó

But far more impressive were the nuances: Very tight and sharp, funky music, great guitar solos by Bruno and wailing drummer Alex Noyse.

Now a year removed from the Jonas tour, the days these guys have left playing for their fans (if there was any doubt thatÕs who they were, it was removed when they screamed along loudly to between-set Jonas songs that played over the speakers) are numbered. Bruno wore a full beard, for GodÕs sake.

But they deserve to be heard by an older audience. Their songs, already good, are getting better. Their musicianship is better than most pop/punk bands out there.

ThereÕs no reason they shouldnÕt be hits in their own right. Except that they used to be The Jonas BrothersÕ opening act.
